What I learned in my first semester of college

College has always been something in life I was beyond excited for. During my senior year of high school, it was all I could think about. At that point, I had become completely sickened with high school. I know what you may be thinking: “Now you wish you could go back”. That is completely false though. I LOVE college. It’s hard, it’s stressful..but hey that’s life! I wouldn’t trade this for anything..especially when I pretty much go to the best school ever. Anyways, as a freshman, college is a whole new experience and is life changing. I’ve learned and seen a lot just in this first semester.

What I learned:

~ Studying is VERY important. This is something I’m still struggling with simply because I am NOT a studying person at all. I’ve always absorbed the info in class or crammed a bit the night/morning before.

~ Having fun is important. There’s so much to do, so many people to meet on campus. You don’t have to be in Greek life to have fun and get involved.

~ It’s all on you. Even though most of us aren’t totally independent yet, most of life’s decisions are completely in your hands now. You’re not the little boy/girl anymore and you have to make the right choices and be responsible. Does everyone do this? NO. But it’s good to at least try, you will eventually be totally independent at some point.

~ “Freshman 15” can vary. Not everyone gains weight or at least gain 15 pounds. Your diet will completely change though. Eventually you will get tired of that dining hall food and will be anxious to head home for those true homecooked meals.

~ Nobody cares. It’s not high school and you’re not being judged everyday.

~ The crazy finals week myths are true. You will not sleep, you will be full of caffeine, and you will procrastinate..A LOT.

~ There will be drinking but you do NOT have to participate in it. Don’t feel pressured to drink cause it seems like EVERYONE is doing it because really not everyone does it. I’m not saying drinking is bad nor am I judging those who do it..I just knew I wasn’t comfortable with or at least ready to drink.

~ In dorms, pulled fire alarms SUCK. Especially after midnight and when it’s cold outside.

~ DO ALL YOUR HOMEWORK. You may think it’s not worth much but when it’s time for final grades homework can either make or break your grade.

~ HAVE FUN. College should be some of the best times of your life. Enjoy it šŸ™‚

  1. Hi Premed Girl,

Would you like some inspiring reading for winter break? I highly recommend The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. And if you like that one, I also recommend Atlas Shrugged for summer reading.

    Best wishes! šŸ™‚
    Eric
